The sizing system for slotted inserts generally follows the following parameters:
Internal Thread Size: Refers to the standard thread size available after the insert is installed, such as metric threads like M4, M5, M6, and M8, or imperial threads like #6-32, #8-32, #10-24, and 1/4-20.
Outer Diameter & Length: The outer diameter and length determine the required pre-drilled hole size. Common lengths include 5mm, 7mm, 10mm, and 12mm to accommodate materials of varying thicknesses.
Head Style:
Externally knurled head: The head features straight or cross-grained knurling. During installation, the teeth dig into the surrounding material, providing strong resistance to rotation.
Smooth head: Offers a simpler appearance, primarily relying on an interference fit or adhesive to prevent rotation.
Slotted threaded insert
Brass
The most commonly used material. It offers good machinability, corrosion resistance, and moderate strength. It is often nickel- or chrome-plated for a silvery appearance and enhanced rust resistance.
Carbon Steel
It is typically zinc- or nickel-plated for rust resistance. Stronger than brass and lower in cost, it's a cost-effective option.
Stainless Steel
Such as 303 or 304 stainless steel. Offers excellent corrosion resistance and high strength, making it suitable for wet environments or food-grade equipment (like 304 stainless steel), but at a higher cost.
Aluminum
Lightweight and corrosion-resistant, but with lower strength, it's suitable for light-load applications.
Extremely high pull-out and torque resistance: Once installed, especially with externally knurled heads, they provide a connection strength far exceeding the inherent strength of the material, preventing the screw from stripping even after repeated assembly and disassembly.
Easy and efficient installation: Quickly install using a standard soldering iron or a dedicated hot melt installation tool, eliminating the need for large equipment.
Neat and aesthetically pleasing: After installation, the screw sits flush with the workpiece surface, offering a clean appearance superior to many exposed nut connections.
Suitable for thin sheet materials: Provides a reliable threading solution for sheet materials with limited thickness.
