Self-tapping threaded inserts
Self-Tapping Insert

Self-tapping threaded inserts

Self-Tapping Insert is a one-piece, internally-threaded bushing whose external surface is formed as a hardened cutting or rolling thread. It is designed to create or restore strong, reusable threads directly in soft or non-ferrous parent materials—such as aluminum, magnesium, plastics, wood composites, or even thin-gauge steel—without the need for a separate tapping operation. After installation, the insert becomes a permanent metal thread that accepts standard bolts or screws, enabling unlimited disassembly and re-assembly without loss of holding power.

All materials are heat-treated to 40–48 HRC on the external cutting zone, while the internal threads remain at 28–32 HRC to prevent galling.

    Thread Range: Metric M2 × 0.4 up to M24 × 2.5; Imperial #2-56 UNC through ¾-10 UNC.

    Body Styles:
    – Cutting slotted (302 style) for through holes and rapid machining.
    – Cutting bores (307/308 style) for blind holes and maximum torque resistance.
    – Thin-wall variants for restricted wall thickness.
Head Options: flush, countersunk 90°, and miniature flange heads for flush or protruding requirements.

    Advantages

◎ No Pre-Tapping: External cutting or rolling threads eliminate the need for a separate tap, cutting installation time by 50–70 %.

◎ Strong Load Path: Cold-worked parent material and large thread engagement deliver 1.5–2× the pull-out strength of the original tapped hole.

◎ Vibration & Fatigue Resistance: Undercut or serrated edges lock axially and radially, meeting MIL-STD-1312-8 vibration specifications.

◎ Re-Usability: Threads are hardened but smooth, allowing >50 removal/insert cycles with <5 % torque decay.

    ◎ Temperature & Chemical Tolerance: Stainless variants operate from –240 °C to +450 °C, pass 1 000 h salt-spray per ASTM B117.

◎ Cost & Weight Savings: Enables thinner wall sections and lighter alloys without sacrificing joint integrity.

◎ Drill the pilot hole to the recommended diameter and depth.

◎ (Optional) Countersink 90° to ensure flush seating.

◎ Using an electric or manual driver set to low RPM, thread the Self-Tapping Insert into the hole until the top is flush with the surface. For plastic or thin metal, a light press-in operation may be used.

◎ Inspect visually; a correctly installed insert will show uniform chips (slotted style) or clean rolled threads (tri-lobe style) and sit flush without protrusion.

◎ Allow any induced stresses to relax (5–10 min for plastics), then torque-test the mating bolt to specification.
